If there is a time in your life where you have wondered why and what is the difference, I mean really would it make a difference if I rather use a 10 W 40 or the 15 W 40 oil in my car?
I know I have an some people literally do not know what it means lets start with what you need to know.
What is 10W 40?
In a 10w-40, the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight) means that the lubricant oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the “W” number the better the oil’s cold temperature/cold start performance. The 40 in a 10w-40 means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C.
What is 15W 40?
The first number 15W is the viscosity of the oil at cold temperature, and the second number 40 is the viscosity at 100 °C. The 15W40 designation means that the oil is a multigrade oil. It has the viscosity of 15W when cold and the viscosity of SAE 40 when hot. This means that one type of oil works in all temperatures
What types of oil do you get?
- Mineral Oil
Mineral oils are formulated in a variety of viscosity grades and quality levels. They are recommended for drivers with simple engine designs and regular driving styles. Drivers with a heavy foot or varied driving styles are highly recommended to go for synthetic oils, they have a longer service life and oil drain interval too!
- Synthetic Oil
Synthetic oils are chemically engineered, the oil molecules are therefore more uniform in shape with fewer impurities and better properties than mineral oils. As synthetic oils are formulated with higher performing additives, they tend to perform better at extreme ends of the temperature spectrum, be it high or low.
- Semi-Synthetic Oil
Semi-synthetic oils use a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils for added resistance to oxidation in comparison to mineral oil and at the same time provide excellent low-temperature properties for your beloved engine.
- High-Mileage Oil
High-mileage oils are specially formulated for older vehicles or newer vehicles with over 100,000 kilometres on the odometer. High mileage oils, with a special blend of additives and formulation, helps to reduce burn-off of engine oil and concurrently helps to prevent oil leaks that may occur in older or high-mileage engines.
Always follow your vehicle owner’s manual to determine the correct motor oil specification, viscosity grade, and oil drain interval for your engine.
